Best Apps for Traveling in Korea (2026): Maps, Taxi, Translation & Discounts
Short version: install Naver Map, Papago, Kakao T, and KakaoTalk before you fly. They handle the four things Google can't fully do in Korea — navigation, translation, taxis, and messaging. Add one or two booking apps for cheap tickets, and you're ready.
Korea is one of the most connected countries on earth, but the apps you rely on at home don't all work the way you expect here. Google Maps can't give driving directions, Uber is limited, and half the bookings assume you have a Korean messenger. This guide covers the apps that actually make traveling in Korea easy in 2026 — grouped by what you'll use them for, with honest notes on which ones foreigners can use without a Korean phone number.
📶 First things first: get online. Every app below needs data. Set up a Korea eSIM so you have internet the second you step off the plane — no hunting for airport WiFi, no roaming shock.
🗺️ Maps & Navigation
This is the big one. Because of a Korean data-export law, Google Maps has no driving directions and only partial walking routes in Korea. Use a local map app instead — both have English:
Naver Map
The best all-round map for Korea. Accurate public-transport routing (subway + bus with live arrivals), walking directions, subway exit numbers, opening hours, and reviews. Search in English or paste a Korean address. This is the one app you'll open the most.
KakaoMap
An excellent alternative with a cleaner interface for some users. Great for walking directions and finding the right subway exit. Many locals keep both — if one gives an odd route, check the other.
💡 Tip: search places by their Korean name when you can — English spellings sometimes miss smaller cafes and shops.
🌐 Translation
Papago
Made by Naver, Papago is noticeably better than Google Translate for Korean. Use camera mode to translate menus and signs in real time, voice mode to talk with a taxi driver, and conversation mode for back-and-forth. Download the offline Korean pack as a backup.
Google Translate
Still worth having as a second opinion and for its offline camera translation. Between Papago and Google Translate, you'll never be truly stuck.

Kakao T

Subway Korea / KakaoMetro

Uber

Coupang Eats & Baemin (배달의민족)
Korea's two big food-delivery apps. Amazing selection, but heads up: they often need a Korean phone number or card, and the menus are mostly in Korean (Papago camera to the rescue). If you're in a hotel or Airbnb, they're worth a try.
CatchTable & Naver
CatchTable handles restaurant reservations (popular spots book out fast). For reviews and hours, Naver is more reliable in Korea than Google — search the restaurant and check its Naver page.

KakaoTalk
Everyone in Korea uses KakaoTalk, not WhatsApp. Some tours, guesthouses, and shops only reply on Kakao, and it's how you'll keep in touch with people you meet. Install it before you go.
